How The Opportunity Council Can Save You THOUSANDS On Your Remodel Projects

Image titleToday I am going to share a secret with you that can save you thousands of dollars when upgrading your home. It is called the Community Energy Challenge through the Opportunity Council. Any home owner or business in Whatcom, Skagit, San Juan, or Island county can take advantage of this program, and I highly recommend it. You might have seen signs posted in people's yards advertising the Community Energy Challenge. Well, today you are going to learn that these people saved tons of money and you can too!

What is the Community Energy Challenge? It is a program put on by the Opportunity Council, a local non-profit designed to serve homeless and low-income families and individuals. The Community Energy Challenge is designed to help make Western Washington a leader in energy efficiency, and it is the most successful program like this in the nation. It has already assessed over 1000 homes and 250 businesses.

What does the Community Energy Challenge do? After scheduling an appointment, an advisor comes out to your home to perform an energy assessment. They will perform a blower door test, use infrared cameras, test your appliances, inspect your furnace and ducts, etc. Afterwards they generate a report showing how efficient your home is and what improvements will make the biggest difference. This assessment costs $200, and it is completely worth it; and if you agree to some of the upgrades, they knock $100 off that. With this report you will have simple low cost fixes and larger upgrades that can recoup the initial cost in just one year in energy bills. But, that is only the beginning. This advisor will also sign you up for any utility rebates you might qualify for and maximize your energy savings.

On top of that, with some of the recommended major upgrades you decide on, they will cover up to 30% of the costs. Plus, if there are any incentives offered by the utility companies to make these upgrades, the Opportunity Council will match those incentives.  As an actual example of the amount of savings you get by going this route, let's look at installing a heat pump. First, heat pumps are ridiculously efficient, up to 200%, and can also cool your home, which is great. These can cost $5000 to have installed; well, not if you go through the Community Energy Challenge, there is a $1200 incentive through PSE, to have one installed and Opportunity Council will match that. Combine that with the extra savings you will save on your monthly bill and you are looking at a heat pump for 50% off!

So, if you are thinking about making some upgrades to your home to improve efficiency, stop and give the Community Energy Challenge a call. Insulation, appliances, furnaces, heat pumps, can all be covered under this program, so make sure you check them out. Also, they can provide advice about solar panels and other upgrades. It's easy, the advisors are not salesmen, you will learn so much about your home, you'll increase the value of your home, and you will save money. This is what I call a Win:Win!
